CERTICATE VERSUS SKILLS

IS A MASTER’S DEGREE STILL THE 'KEY TO SUCCESS' IN 2025?
Let’s unpack this gently… but directly.
In Kenya, when things don’t go as planned after graduation, the default response is: “Let me go back for my Master’s.”
Why?
Because we’ve been conditioned to believe:
More education = More money More degrees = More respect A Master’s = A better job, bigger office, fatter cheque
But let me ask you — how true is this in today’s world?
Today:
- Your favorite boda boda guy might be carrying a degree in Business Administration
- Your Uber driver? Bachelor’s in Computer Science
- Someone’s house help? Diploma in Journalism
- Tea farm in Kericho? Yes — someone with a doctorate is plucking leaves
So, what went wrong?
We were sold a beautiful lie:
A degree is your ticket to success
But the reality is:
- A degree without a marketable skill = frustration
- A Master’s with no practical value = debt
- Education without application = confusion
Am I saying don’t go to school?
Absolutely not.
Am I saying drop out and start a YouTube channel?
Calm down. No.
I’m saying this:
Make sure what you’re learning can be USED In real life. In the economy we live in. In a job market that’s already choked.
Because in 2025 — the market doesn’t care about titles.
It cares about:
- Skills
- Execution
- Problem-solving
- Contribution
You spent millions to get a piece of paper. Now ask yourself:
- Can it earn you a living — or just likes on LinkedIn?
- Can it solve a problem — or just collect dust in your CV folder?
- Can it feed your children — or just your ego?
Education is not dead. But the definition of ‘educated’ has changed.
✅ Learn what earns
✅ Apply what matters
✅ And above all — stay useful
